The BIR CT inspection service center utilizes a 225 kV microfocus CT system for high resolution scanning of small parts and organic specimens. Typical pixel resolution is in the 10 micron to 70 micron range depending on the object's size and material density. This system is used to analyze organic specimens such as animal and human bone‚ small fossils and geological samples‚ anthropological specimens‚ batteries‚ small aluminum and magnesium castings‚ microelectronic components‚ ceramic parts‚ small civil engineering cores (asphalt/concrete) and carbon and fiber composite structures.

Volume CT slice image of a time-release cold capsule showing the medication granules and filler material. The capsule was imaged at 90 kV. The volume stack of 512x512 images consists of 25‚ 50-micron slices acquired in 2.8 minutes and reconstructed in a little over 1.5 minutes. The field of view was 10 mm. Pixel resolution (x and y) is 0.0195 mm. Z is equivalent to the slice thickness (0.050 mm). The capsule itself is about 7-8 mm in diameter. |
